Exercise Bike vs Treadmill: What’s Better To Train With?

Exercise bikes and treadmills are both cardio machines and have different uses. The decision of training with which machine depends on you. This blog gives you insight into both machines: the exercise bike and the treadmill. Look into it to find the machine that best suits you.

Treadmill vs Exercise Bike: What's the Difference?

Both the exercise bike and treadmill have very similar uses, but have different functions. Some of the differences are mentioned below:

Treadmill

  • A treadmill is exercise equipment and a staple in every gym because it can be used for warm-up, strength training, cardiovascular training, cool-down, and more.
  • It can be used to run indoors, in simple words.
  • A treadmill has two handles on both sides, along with a belt on the surface for walking and running.

Exercise Bike

  • An exercise bike is just like a cycle with two pedals, a seat, and handlebars. There are various types of exercise bikes available for different workout routines.
  • Most of the bikes come with adjustable resistance according to the workout.
  • These are joint-friendly and resemble a cycle completely.

Pros and Cons of Exercise Bikes vs Treadmills

Both the exercise bike and treadmills have their own advantages and disadvantages, which are mentioned below:

Exercise Bike Pros

  • An exercise bike is generally used to improve cardiovascular fitness as it is a type of full-body workout equipment.
  • Exercise bikes can strengthen your muscles, lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and help with fat loss.
  • People who love cycling but don’t like the outdoors can choose exercise bikes that resemble a bicycle and can be used indoors.

Exercise Bike Cons

  • Exercise bikes cannot provide the benefits of weight-bearing exercises, which is their biggest demerit.
  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is not much improved with exercise bikes; you can get the same benefit from weight-bearing exercises. Loss of BMD can lead to osteoporosis.
  • The exercise bikes may have shortcomings, such as soreness in the saddle, lower back pain, neck pain, and repetitive motion, which can lead to injuries.

Treadmill Pros

  • A treadmill is an excellent choice for people who want to include walking or running in their daily workout routine.
  • Some treadmills also offer an incline workout option. If it exists, you can challenge yourself to take inclined walks, adjusting the speed. Incline progression is more straightforward than running on a treadmill.
  • Treadmills help overall heart health, improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart-related diseases.
  •

Treadmill Cons

  • Though a treadmill is a great choice, walking and running on it are different from normal walking on the surface.
  • Sometimes, if you cannot keep your balance, there is a risk of falling from the end of the belt. But some treadmills allow you to stop them with a safety leash.
  • Treadmills don’t offer much variety in workout patterns. Though treadmills provide some variety, they remain limited, and over time, that variety may become repetitive.

Exercise bike vs. treadmill for burning calories?

  • Many people choose cardiovascular exercises to burn calories. Cardio can be done on either a treadmill or an exercise bike. Still, when the talk is about an exercise bike vs. a treadmill, the decision comes down to intensity, speed, incline, body weight, and fitness level.
  • When you are into interval training, you can burn calories on both the bike and treadmill.
  • It is seen that a treadmill typically burns more calories than an exercise bike. Still, by increasing the intensity of your workout and doing it for a little longer, you can make the calorie burn look similar.
  • If you are looking to burn calories and don’t have any issues like joint pain, you can proceed with a treadmill, as it burns more calories than an exercise bike.

For Strength Building, Which is Better: Exercise Bike or Treadmill?

  • Strength is built when the workout focuses on the whole body.
  • Treadmill engages legs, core, and also the upper body, including arms, shoulders, and chest, especially when you use the incline. Plus, running strengthens the bone density.
  • An exercise bike is a better choice for people with joint, ankle, or knee pain. An exercise bike generally targets the lower body, including the legs, hamstrings, and calves and does not provide the same weight-bearing effects that a treadmill offers. The impact on the upper body is lower than with an incline treadmill workout.
  • Go with a treadmill if your primary objective is to strengthen yourself and increase your bone density. Choose this if you are preparing for a run or so. But keep in mind the joint and knee pain related to it and take steps accordingly.
  • If your goal is not to build high strength or do high-intensity workouts, then go with an exercise bike. Choose an exercise bike if you already have joint, ankle, or knee issues, or if you want to protect them.
  • But overall, the fight between the exercise cycle and the treadmill is won by the treadmill, as it strengthens more than the exercise bike.

Exercise bike vs. treadmill for belly fat

  • Now, the most recommended way to lose belly fat is through regular cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and a balanced diet.
  • Exercise bikes work best for low-intensity exercise and for people with joint problems. Whereas a treadmill offers weight-bearing exercise, it helps you lose belly fat faster than an exercise bike.
  • If your core priority is to lose belly fat as soon as possible, then choose a treadmill because it is the best option for belly fat loss.
  • But if you have knee issues and are okay with a lower-intensity workout, choose an exercise bike.

Exercise Bike and Treadmill in HIIT Exercises:

HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training, in which a high-intensity workout is alternated with recovery periods. You can try a treadmill, an exercise bike, or both, along with HIIT. Either alternate the machines, use both for specific exercises, or complete one HIIT exercise on one machine and then jump to another machine for the next HIIT exercise.

Benefits of Mixing

  • HIIT workouts are already time-efficient, and when we combine them with equipment, they become even more efficient.
  • Combining both will combine muscular strength with cardiovascular exercise.
  • We can also get joint-friendly options, like exercise bikes, rather than just treadmill workouts.

How to Decide Which Workout Machine Is Right for You

Well, to decide between an exercise bike and a treadmill, you will have to decide on things that you feel more comfortable with. If you want to increase your strength, lose belly fat, and burn a good amount of calories, then go with a treadmill.

But if you don’t want all the above right away, you're okay with low-intensity workouts, and you have knee or joint pain, then choose an exercise bike. So, between the exercise cycle and the treadmill, choose whichever you prefer. But in the end, you have to use the cardiovascular machines regularly, along with strength training and a balanced diet.

Hence, both the exercise bike and the treadmill can be used according to our preferences. It is completely fine to choose an exercise bike if you want to keep your joints safe. But make sure you do the exercises correctly, or you will face health issues that can be very difficult to overcome.
