Almost anyone can do incline treadmill workouts. But, like any other exercise, you need to perform them the right way. Start with shorter durations and make slow movements if you are starting.
Here are some tips for fitness enthusiasts on incline treadmill workouts:
Start slow with a lower incline level. First, build stamina, then you can perform better in the incline workouts.
Gradually increase your speed when you feel you are comfortable with the current speed and incline; slowly raise the level and speed a bit. In this way, gradually increase everything while performing an incline workout on the treadmill.
Mix flat-surface walking with inclined walking. So, your body gets time to get used to the incline walk.
For advanced fitness enthusiasts, increase the speed or incline, then extend the duration.
As mentioned above, the famous workout structure, “12-3-30”, can be performed by anyone, but you need to have that fitness level. You can definitely try these types of workouts, but make sure you are fit enough to perform them.
Do not hold on to the handrails. Doing this will defeat the purpose of your workout. If you feel like you have to hold on, then decrease the incline or speed.
The treadmill incline walking workout is not easy. Hear what your body is trying to say to you. Do not push yourself beyond your desired levels or your threshold.
Inclined treadmill workouts can also cause injuries, such as shin splints and Achilles tendonitis, if you do too much in a short period of time. Give your body time and space to get adjusted to the inclined treadmill workout.
When you do an incline workout on the treadmill, be careful regarding your posture. Your back and neck can get sprained if you lean too far forward.
Add more variety to your workout. Include exercises like resistance training to follow a much better workout plan.
There are many incline treadmill workouts to try, and below are some of the workouts you can try:
12-3-30 workout
The 12-3-30 is one of the best inclined treadmill workouts.
Set up the incline on a 12% incline with 3 mph for 30 minutes.
This workout is suitable for joint pain because it's low-impact.
This workout focuses on the lower body and core, including the glutes and hamstrings.
Start slow with less incline for less time. Slowly increase the pace on both the incline and speed.
Interval Incline Workouts
High Low Interval:
Start by walking at a higher incline, like 8% to 12%, for a few minutes.
Then lower the incline to 1%-3% and walk on it to help you recover.
Repeat this pattern according to your fitness level and the time you have available.
Pyramid Workout:
Start by warming up at a 1%-2% incline for 5 minutes.
Then start with the climb procedure. Add 1% incline to the previous incline for the first minute. Then increase the incline by an additional 2% and walk for the next 2 minutes. Then add 3% incline and walk for 3 minutes. You can increase the pace further or walk with the same incline and speed.
Next, hold the inclined pace for the next 2 minutes.
Start descending by reducing the incline by 1% every minute for the next 3 minutes.
Start the cool down at 0%-1% incline and do it for 5 minutes.
Ladder Workout:
Start with a jog on 1% inclined treadmill for a minute.
Next, increase the incline by 1% every 30 seconds until you reach 9%.
Then start decreasing the incline by 2% every 30 seconds until you reach 1% incline again.
Keep repeating the last step: go 9% and then decrease to 1%.
Complete the workout by walking for 1 minute at 1% incline.
These were some inclined treadmill workouts, along with the process for performing them. Treadmill incline workouts are more effective than surface-level walking, but the key is to perform them correctly; a slight deviation can lead to greater injury.
